Sony PlayStation Gold Wireless Headset Review - Review 2022
Between Bluetooth and the 3.5mm headset jack on the DualShock 4 controller, the PlayStation 4 platform offers a lot of options for gaming headsets. This hasn't stopped Sony from offering its own line of headsets, like the first-class Platinum Wireless Headset we tested last year. The company recently refreshed its Gold Headset, which has a similar blueprint and a lower $99.99 price. It doesn't experience quite as luxurious or sound quite every bit proficient as the higher-end model, but if you want to stay wireless without spending much coin information technology'due south a very solid choice.
Blueprint
The Gilded Headset is like in blueprint to the Platinum Headset, only slightly simpler and with no exposed metal. It consists of 2 thick, round earcups connected by a jumpsuit horseshoe-shaped headband. The headband is wrapped in black faux leather, and the lightly padded over-ear earpads are covered in the same material. Instead of using telescoping artillery at each end of the headband, the earcups are attached to an internal mechanism that lets you slide them upwards and down on the headband without expanding or contracting the headset. Plastic L and R marks on the headband indicate each earcup, though if yous adjust the earcups high on the headband they'll cake the markings.
The headset is reasonably comfortable, but the light padding of the circular earcups can feel a bit cramped for larger ears. Both less expensive wired headsets similar the Astro Gaming A10 and pricier wireless headsets similar the PlayStation Platinum Headset and Astro Gaming A20 are easier to wear for longer periods of fourth dimension.
All of the connections and controls sit down on the edge of the left earcup. The forepart edge holds a thin rocker switch that adjusts the rest between game and chat audio. Following that edge down toward the back are a pinhole microphone, a power/mode switch that toggles between standard and bass heave modes, a iii.5mm jack, a micro USB port, a mic button, a book rocker, and finally a button to activate virtual environment sound on the superlative of the dorsum of the earcup.
Unlike most gaming headsets, the PlayStation Golden doesn't have a blast microphone. It relies on a pinhole mic on the left earcup. This is similar to the microphone on the Platinum headset, and on the 1More Spearhead gaming headset for PCs. For a pinhole mic information technology sounds reasonably clear, and is reliable for in-game voice chat. Withal, if you want to record or stream your games on the internet and have clear commentary, you should consider a wired headset with a boom mic for a clearer sound, similar the Astro Gaming A10.
Connectivity
Rather than connecting directly to the PlayStation 4 using Bluetooth, the Gold uses a USB dongle for a better wireless connection. The dongle is a elementary black USB stick that plugs into the front of the PS4 or PS4 Pro, with a blue light on the front end to indicate when the headset is connected. The headset comes pre-paired with the dongle, and will automatically connect to your PS4 when you lot plow information technology on. The USB adapter means you lot don't have to fuss with Bluetooth and the headset can accept higher quality audio than Bluetooth allows, but it does use upwards one of the ii USB ports on the PS4. If you besides take PlayStation VR, that'southward both USB ports accounted for and none available for charging your controllers or using them with a wired connection.
While Sony clearly designed the Gold Headset for use with the PS4, it can piece of work with other devices. It showed up equally a generic wireless headset when nosotros plugged it into a Windows 10 test calculator, and worked perfectly fine this manner. PC use isn't formally supported, but nosotros didn't accept whatsoever issues. The 3.5mm port as well lets you use the headset wired, plugged into your DualShock 4's headset jack or any other device that works with a 3.5mm connection, fifty-fifty with the headset turned off. Sony doesn't specify how long the Gold'south battery lasts, merely we tested it for several hours without needing to charge it again.
Music Performance
For a gaming headset, the Gilt is surprisingly underwhelming in terms of bass. Information technology deals with low frequency sounds very conservatively, non attempting to accomplish into the sub-bass range. This means our bass test track, The Pocketknife'south "Silent Shout," comes through at maximum volume with no distortion. Information technology also ways that it doesn't sound particularly powerful or even borderline dangerous at top volume levels, which nosotros expect to see in headsets and headphones to provide wiggle room for comfortable listening at lower volumes.
Despite the lack of deep bass, the Aureate Headset doesn't have a sparse or tinny sound. It handles depression-mids capably, and treats college frequencies with finesse. The opening guitar notes in Yes' "Roundabout" show a skillful corporeality of string texture, and while the electric bass doesn't get much ability, the track manages to sound fairly rich.
Game Performance
The Gold Headset has false vii.1-aqueduct environs sound when connected to a PS4. Since it has but ii drivers (one for each ear), the false environment outcome won't give you particularly good directional imaging, and won't provide much of a tactical advantage. Even so, the mixing used to produce the consequence is very good at making games sound much better than stereo mixes, producing the illusion of a wider soundstage even when you can't pinpoint the sources of those sounds.
Nier: Automata's superlative soundtrack sounds very good on the Golden Headset. The game's first-class score comes through clearly, with plenty of low-mid presence to give the music weight. The high-mids and high frequency-heavy sound effects and voices can exist hands heard through the headset, neither fighting amongst themselves or with the score for your attention.
While simulated environment tin can't give you a good impression of whether an audio source is in front of or backside you lot, it can produce a good sense of lateral imaging, thanks to the mixing of the left and right drivers. This comes through in Warframe, where the poppy and punchy high-mids of gunfire are mixed well enough that left-to-correct positioning can exist made out.
Conclusions
The Sony PlayStation Aureate Wireless Headset is a solid and affordable accessory that makes some concessions in condolement for its $100 price. It's very appealing if you lot desire a capable wireless PS4 or PC headset and y'all don't want to spend more $100, though you can find meliorate-feeling and better-sounding headsets if you're willing to go with a wired option or spend more for a better wireless model. The Astro Gaming A10 is still an excellent option at $60, and even wired it's convenient to use with a PS4 by but plugging it into your gamepad. The Steelseries Arctis seven, the Astro Gaming A20, and Sony'due south own PlayStation Platinum Headset all feel nicer and offering more powerful sound without wires, merely you'll be spending closer to $150 for whatsoever of those options.
